The Hidden Power and Pitfalls of Rules in Our Health Journey

#sacredboundaries Mar 23, 2025

In our quest for health and well-being, rules often become our first refuge. They promise clarity in a confusing nutritional landscape and structure when our eating feels chaotic. Yet, as someone who has worked with hundreds of clients struggling with their relationship with food, I've witnessed the paradoxical nature of rules – how they can both serve and sabotage our deepest intentions.

The Allure of Health Rules

There's something deeply comforting about a clear set of health guidelines. "Drink eight glasses of water daily." "Exercise three times a week." "Get eight hours of sleep." These directives cut through the noise of conflicting advice and offer a straightforward path. In a world of endless choices and constant decisions, rules provide the relief of simplicity.

When we follow rules perfectly, they reward us with a sense of control and virtue. They can create a temporary sanctuary of order in what often feels like chaos. And sometimes, they do lead to positive outcomes – at least initially.

When Rules Become Rulers

But there's a shadow side to health rules that emerges when they shift from being tools we use to masters we serve. I've observed clients meticulously following every guideline while their relationship with their health grows increasingly complex. Even as they achieve "perfect compliance," they often find themselves caught in complicated emotional terrain.

Rules, by their nature, tend toward binary thinking. This creates a psychological challenge where any perceived "slip" can trigger shame, guilt, and often, a sense of failure that leads to abandoning healthy intentions altogether.

"I made one choice that didn't align with my plan, so I've already failed. Why bother continuing?"

This all-or-nothing cycle undermines sustainable health, yet it's a common outcome of rigid rule-based approaches. Meanwhile, the underlying reasons for our cravings and behaviors remain unaddressed, making lasting change even more elusive.

Questioning the Rule Itself

Perhaps the real issue isn't whether we can follow the rules perfectly—it's whether rules are even the right approach to begin with. What if our intense reactions to "breaking" rules are actually signaling a deeper wisdom within us?

When we find ourselves consistently resisting certain health guidelines, it's worth asking: What purpose is this rule serving? Is it truly supporting my wellbeing, or is it actually disconnected from what I truly need?

Rules often fail to account for the complex, ever-changing nature of our bodies and lives. They rarely address the underlying "why" behind our behaviors or honor the legitimate needs those behaviors might be meeting.

When Rules Themselves Cause Derailment

Sometimes it's not just our reaction to breaking rules that causes problems—it's the very nature of the rules themselves. Many health rules are designed with a one-size-fits-all approach that ignores individual differences in biology, psychology, and life circumstances.

When we try to force ourselves to follow rules that aren't aligned with our unique needs, derailment isn't just likely—it's almost inevitable. The rule itself becomes the obstacle to sustainable health.

Consider how often health rules:

  • Ignore the body's natural fluctuations and rhythms
  • Fail to account for emotional and psychological needs
  • Create artificial restrictions that trigger intense cravings
  • Set standards that are physically or practically impossible to maintain
  • Foster an unhealthy focus on control rather than wellbeing

If you find yourself repeatedly struggling with the same health guidelines, perhaps it's not your willpower that's the issue—it's the guidelines themselves that need reevaluation.

For those who find themselves particularly resistant to health changes, I encourage you to read my companion piece on "Understanding Your Rebel Part."  Ever Heard of Reactance? There, we explore how psychological reactance affects our health choices and how to work with – rather than against – this natural response when building healthier habits.

Beyond Rules: Sacred Boundaries

What if we moved beyond the entire paradigm of rules? What if, instead of trying to force ourselves into compliance with external standards, we explored what truly nourishes and supports us?

Sacred boundaries emerge from our deepest values and serve as compassionate guidelines. Unlike rules, which focus on restriction and control, boundaries protect what matters most. They're not about limiting yourself but about honoring yourself.

A sacred boundary might sound like: "I honor my value of energy by choosing activities that sustain my vitality throughout the day." This provides direction while respecting your inner wisdom about what you truly need in any given moment.

Crafting Your Relationship with Structure

The journey beyond rules isn't about abandoning structure – it's about transforming your relationship with structure. It's recognizing that the most sustainable frameworks for health are those that emerge from your own wisdom rather than someone else's prescription.

This process begins with curiosity rather than criticism. What values do you want your health choices to reflect? What kinds of boundaries would support your well-being while respecting your autonomy? What's the difference between restriction that depletes you and structure that sustains you?

As you explore these questions, you may discover that the most nourishing approach isn't found in the latest health book but in your own deepening understanding of what truly serves your whole being – body, mind, and spirit.

The Courageous Path Forward

Finding your way beyond rigid rules requires courage. It means navigating uncertainty, making peace with imperfection, and trusting your capacity to learn and grow. It means creating guidelines that serve your well-being rather than sacrificing your well-being to serve your guidelines.

This path isn't always comfortable – transformation rarely is. But it offers something that rigid rules never can: a sustainable, compassionate framework for nourishing yourself that grows more intuitive and empowering over time.

I invite you to reflect on your own history with health rules. Have they ultimately served or sabotaged your well-being? And what might it look like to move beyond rules altogether as you continue your health journey?
